Biting ladybird swarms head for UK

Kathryn Quinn

Britain is facing a new invasion by millions of biting ladybirds as the bugs sweep their way through Europe attacking holidaymakers.

The biting bugs last invaded the UK in 1976 when they swarmed over gardens and parks thanks to ideal breeding and feeding conditions.

Now scientists say they are coming back after causing chaos for holidaying families around Germany's Baltic Sea coast.

Victims say the bugs' bite is like being jabbed hard with a needle.

Zoologist Jan-Peter Hildebrandt explained: "The reason for the invasion is the excellent food offered for their grubs this year.

"These mass breeding events happen every few years because all the conditions like climate and food are perfect for them."

The aggressive Chinese ladybirds can bite so hard it draws blood and swarms can quickly overwhelm small animals and pets.

Tourist chiefs have already warned holidaymakers to avoid contact with the bugs.

A spokesman for local tourist authorities in Rostock, Germany, added: "We advise people not to wear bright colours because these seem to attract them very quickly."
