Customs officials have sent a cheap Christmas up in smoke for cigarette fans - after intercepting a haul of nine million fake fags from China.

The bogus Marlboros - destined for Britain and the rest of Europe - were intercepted at Hamburg harbour in Germany when police became suspicious of a consignment of flat screen TVs.

Inside the boxes were nearly half a million packets of fake branded fags manufactured in their millions in illegal factories in southern China.

One customs official explained: "At this time of year traffickers are trying to get through as many bogus cigarettes as they can for the Christmas market.

"But they're full of toxins and poisons and even more lethal than the real thing. This lot will go into the furnace after being used in evidence."
