Panda Newborn: First Colour Pic

Michael Leidig

Oh baby, just look at you now.

This 11-day-old baby panda was first seen as a tiny, hairless, pale newborn in grainy black and white CCTV images after its birth in Vienna's Schoenbrunn zoo.

Now this amazing colour snapshot - by panda specialist Eveline Dungl - shows the youngster has tripled her birth weight and begun to develop the species' distinctive black and white markings.

Zoo director Dagmar Schratter said: "The young panda is developing marvelously. It has already grown a short black coat on the ears, shoulders and haunches underneath the baby fluff.

"And it also has panda proportions now – it's not so long and thin anymore like it was at birth."

Now mum Yang Yang and her cub - whose sex is still unknown - are to be left in peace until they go on show to the public later this year.

Panda expert Eveline Dungl added: "We think the baby weighs around seven ounces – that's more than twice its birth weight."

"You can also clearly see its milk belly," she joked
