Silent Witness

Kathryn Quinn

Police are still appealing for help in tracking down the parents of a 30-month-old toddler found abandoned outside a McDonald's in Hanau, near Frankfurt in Germany.

The dark haired youngster - believed to be Iranian and called Amir - understands some Farsi which is the language spoken in Iran but no German and has barely said a word since he was found a week ago.

Police issued a picture of the boy last week after failing to identify him and confirmed that as a result two people who had been seen with the child had been identified and were being questioned – but that they were not the parents.

The boy has been living with a foster family since being picked up in front of the fast food chain over a week ago.

Police are refusing to say what the connection is between the two people and the young boy but local media pointed out that Germany has become a popular end destination together with the UK for gangs who bring children in to help them in illegal activities, ranging from begging through to illegal adoption and benefit frauds.
