Flood Pressure

Kathryn Quinn

Cardiac surgeons carried out a vital heart operation on a patient while standing ankle deep in water when their hospital was flooded by torrential rain in southern China.

Clinic administrators in Guangzhou, Guangdong province, refused to evacuate the building saying it would only cost lives, not save them.

Head of surgery Dr De Wan said: "One patient was scheduled for surgery so we switched to emergency power and carried on. He would be dead if we'd delayed."

"It was only rain so we had to wait it out and carry on as normal," he added.

Patient Li Heng told local media: "At least the floors are getting a good wash."
