Hundreds of motorists got the bird when a truckload of 1,000 turkeys overturned on a motorway closing the road for more than five hours.

Only a handful of birds - heading from Denmark to Flensburg, Germany, where the smash happened - survived the accident.

Police say the 68-year-old driver -who survived with minor injuries - lost control of the transporter which rolled off the motorway.

"These birds were heading for a slaughter house so they didn't have much of a future ahead of them but this was a pretty grim way to go," said one officer.
