A 14-year-old shepherd is recovering from severe injuries after a man-eating wild leopard tried to drag him into the jungle for a meal, say police in Umarkhand, western India.

Akshay Rose - who lives beside a wildlife sanctuary - was only saved when his relatives chased off the big cat, who dropped his prey.

Medics say the badly mauled youngster has multiple puncture wounds to his head where the leopard bit him and tried to carry him back to the jungle.

The victim's brother Sanjay, 15, told police: "We suddenly heard Akshay crying for help. We ran and found a big leopard dragging him towards the forest. We started shouting, following which the leopard left Akshay and fled."

The attack is the third case in less then a month, say police.

Three weeks ago three-year-old Sanjana Thorat, was eaten by a leopard when she stepped out of her Mulund home to use the loo.
