Inflation down to 4.49 per cent

Annual inflation in Romania dropped to 4.49 per cent in February, down from 5.2 per cent in January, the National Statistics Institute said today (Weds).

In January, the Romanian consumer price index (CPI) was up by an unexpected 1.68 per cent month on month, mainly due to a 14 per cent increase in tobacco and cigarette prices.

Food and non-food prices inched up by 0.2 per cent each in February, while prices of services were stagnant.

Romania's central bank has an annual inflation target of 3.5 per cent for 2010, with a one-percentage point variation band around the target.
