Romanian exports increase

Romanian exports rose by 19.8 per cent year on year to 2.3 billion Euros in January, according to data provided today (Fri) by the the National Statistics Institute.

Imports were up by 4.4 per cent to 2.7 billion Euros, and vehicles represented the biggest share of exports and imports in January, amounting to 43 per cent of exports and 35 per cent of imports.

The trade deficit in January narrowed to 426.8 million Euros, down from 692 million Euros in January 2008.

Exports were down by 1.5 per cent month on month in January, while imports dropped by 15 per cent.

Romanian trade with EU member states accounted for 75.3 per cent of exports and 70 per cent of imports in January.

For example, Romanian carmaker Dacia, a subsidiary of France’s Renault, sold abroad 270,000 cars last year, 56.1 per cent more than in 2008.

Germany was Dacia's biggest export market in 2009, and the Romanian carmaker sold 84,708 cars there, up by 231.3 per cent from 2008, boosted by Germany's clunkers’ programme.

Its second-largest export market was France, where it sold 65,956 cars (up by 51.4 per cent year on year), followed by Italy, where it sold 21,739 cars (up by 151.9 per cent year on year).
