Romanians bought fewer used German cars last year

Romanians bought 65.3 per cent fewer second hand cars from Germany last year, according to data released today (Fri) by the German Federal Statistics Office.

The cause of the drop in sales is linked to Germany's clunkers' programme in 2009, as owners preferred to take them to scrap iron centers and use the government's vouchers to buy new cars rather than to sell them.

A total of 389,200 used cars worth 5.2 billion Euros were exported by Germany last year,   down by 15 per cent compared to the previous year, according to the office. The number of used cars sold to European countries diminished by 27 per cent year on year to 244,669.

A total of 212,000 used cars were sold in Romania in 2009, according to the Association of Car Producers and Importers (APIA).

Germany was Romanian car make Dacia's biggest export market in 2009, when the Romanian carmaker sold 84,708 cars there, up by 231.3 per cent from 2008
