Four times more companies suspend business activity

The number of private firms that suspended their business activity in the first two months of the year was almost four higher than in the same period last year, according to National Trade Registry Office (ONRC) statistics.

A total of 12,886 Romanian companies suspended their business in the first two months, an increase of 375.5 per cent, compared to 2,710 last year.

Another 1,597 firms went out of business, 112 per cent more than the 751 that did so in January/February 2009.

The number of bankrupt companies was up by 10 per cent month on month to more than 2,000 in January.

A total of 18,421 firms went bankrupt in 2009.
