Eleventh Romanian military killed in Afghanistan

A Romanian officer was killed and four others injured after their convoy drove over a mine in Afghanistan, Defence Ministry officials have said.  

Captain Iuliu-Vasile Unguras, 32, was leading a patrol mission on the A1 highway linking Kandahar to Kabul when one of the vehicles ran over the explosive device 20 kilometres north-east of Qalat yesterday (TUE) morning.  

Unguras was killed in the blast. Four other injured soldiers were taken to military hospitals in Lagman and Kandahar for treatment. 

Captain Unguras was the third Romanian to be killed in Afghanistan this year, and his death comes just days after another Romanian officer was killed 80 kilometers south-west of Kabul, while fighting insurgents alongside a U.S. mission.

Eleven Romanians have been killed in Afghanistan since 2003, when Romania started participating to NATO missions in the country.

Romania currently has 956 troops in Afghanistan.
