MP proposes a ban on human cloning

A Romanian MP wants to ban human cloning by law.

Democratic Liberal MP Mircia Giurgiu said today (Fri) that he would draft a law to ban human cloning and any other applications of bio-medicine that violate human dignity and send it to Parliament.

The MP said the law would comply with EU guidelines on bio-ethics. Any commerce in human embryos would also be banned by the new law.

A recent case in Romania spotlighted the problem of unlawful donation of human eggs. Seven people will be tried in a human-egg trafficking case in Bucharest.

Romanian organized-crime prosecutors have investigated members of a network who allegedly brought couples who couldn’t have children to Romania and then got in touch with people who donated human eggs for money.

Romania has ratified EU conventions on creation of human embryos for research or intervention in the human genome.
