Two of the Romanian gypsies deported from France have been caught carrying out a burglary on the house of the local mayor at Gruia in Mehedinti, Romania.
The pair were among a group of several that had taken advantage of the fact that the village mayor Nedelcu Alecsandru was away on official business to break into his house and "steal everything they could lay their hands on."
A police spokesman said that the gang had turned the house upside down removing several thousand euros worth of material and added that they had clearly learnt some new tricks when it comes to breaking and entering during their time in France.
A police spokesman told local TV station Antena 3: "They knew that the mayor was at a wedding - and they climbed onto the roof and took off tiles to climb in through the ceiling. They took their time ransacking the property - as they knew he was not coming back soon - but were caught by a passing policeman who by chance saw the hole in the roof."
Only two of the gang were caught and both were identified as being gypsies that had recently returned from France.
The police spokesman added: "We suspect that the professional way this was carried out implies that it was something they had clearly done before - we suspect they have crafted their skills as part of a larger gang in Europe. Now they are testing out what they learned here."
