Adoption procedures sped up by the government

The Romanian Government sped up adoptions and rejected yet again international adoptions, on Wednesday.

The measures were taken to help reintegrate the 67,000 abandoned children currently in Romania.

The average number of adoptions in Romania has been 1,700 in the last two years, compared to 1,200 previously. In total, there are 67,000 children in the state child protection system, of which 23,000 are in orphanages and around 20,000 are with maternal assistants.

The new law says a child with unknown parents can be declared adoptable by a court within 30 days after a birth certificate has been issued, while a child who is in state care can be declared free for adoption a year after the parents stopped showing an interest in him.

Romania does not allow international adoptions, not even by Romanian citizens who are working and living abroad.
