New government voted for by Parliament

Romanian Times

Romania’s new government, led by Mihai-Razvan Ungureanu, was voted in by the parliament today (Thurs).

"I am not coming to you at difficult times to make unrealistic promises. A prosperous time will not start tomorrow. We have a long road to go. Caution and responsibility are the governing principles in 2012," said Ungureanu before the investiture vote.

A number of 237 votes were in favour and two votes against, while the number of necessary votes was 232. The opposition did not participate in the vote, with the exception of some, including the Social Democrat Party (PSD) leader Victor Ponta.

The ministers picked for the Ungureanu Cabinet were heard on Wednesday by the specialist committees of parliament and all of them were accepted, despite the absence of the Opposition MPs and the lack of a quorum in some committees.

The new government’s programme includes prudence and responsibility and measures to generate new jobs and increase incomes.

Former Prime Minister Emil Boc, head of the ruling party Democrat Liberal Party PDL, resigned on Monday, amid street protests and political unrest.
