People walk on roofs in villages stranded by snow

romaniantimes.at

Over 23,000 persons in Buzau county, eastern Romania, are completely isolated by snow, the local emergency units said today (Fri).

Inhabitants of 38 villages are stranded, as snow got to cover the houses' roofs. New paths are made from one roof to another.

An Interior Ministry helicopter was asked for by local authorities in order to transport 11 persons, who were in a severe condition, to hospital, among them were pregnant women.

Local emergency units will try today to clear the roads of snow, so as to get food and water to the stranded people, mostly elderly pensioners.

The inhabitants have no electricity and many had to put in some channels from their houses up in order to get enough air to breath.

The priest from the village Glodeanu-Silistea, Buzau county, died last week, but the burial cannot take place until an autopsy establishes the cause of his death. But because of the deep snow, which reaches more than 3.5 metres high, his body could not be transported to the legal medicine institute.

Reporters who reached the area show how people walk on roofs in the stranded villages:
