Half of the population of Romania has never used a Personal Computer (PC), the highest level in the European Union, EU’s statistics body Eurostat informed today (Mon).
Only 50 per cent of Romanians, aged between 16 and 74, have used a PC. At the opposite end is Sweden, with 96 per cent, followed by Denmark and The Netherlands with 93 per cent, Great Britain and Finland with 91 per cent respectively.
Eurostat reveals the EU average is around 78 per cent, and Romania is in the last position, after Bulgaria (55 per cent).
The highest number of Romanians using the internet is among the youngsters, 81 per cent of the young poeple aged between 16 and 24, having used a PC at least once, the survey shows.
Reacting to the Eurostat data, Romanian Communication Minister, Răzvan Mustea said that Romania is the country of extremes, when it comes to internet use. "Romania has areas with ultra high speed internet connection, super qualified IT specialists as well as super qualified hackers, but for most of the citizens, the Internet still remains a sort of UFO," he said.
