The Opposition Social Liberal Union (USL) will file a motion of no confidence against the Cabinet led by former chief spy Mihai Razvan Ungureanu tomorrow, the co-president of USL Victor Ponta told a press conference today (Tues).
The Liberals, Social Democrats and Conservatives are keen to see the cabinet fall and organize snap elections.
"The censure motion is a constructive solution, a solution to replace the Ungureanu Cabinet (…) Romanians should decide through vote who they want to lead them from now on", Ponta said.
The opposition checks the way in which the government handles the selling of natural resources (gas, oil, gold, copper), the way in which public money is wasted on electoral bribes and the breach of the constitutional principle of the autonomy of the universities.
Social Democrat leader Ponta explained USL slams the practice of the government to give away rapidly the last remaining natural resources of the country, with no strategy and no public debates, by selling the raw resources or by selling shares in state-owned energy companies.
Ponta slammed Prime Minister (PM) Ungureanu for using public money to buy support from local elects in the view of the upcoming local and legislative elections due mid-July and end November respectively. "The Cabinet made illegal payments to the county councils and municipalities led by the representatives of the parties in government, in a time when Romania goes through economic recession and austerity".
The third reason for the Opposition’s censure motion is the decision of the cabinet to set up a medicine school in Hungarian at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Targu Mures (West) without the consent of the board of the University.
The setting up of the school of medicine was decided at the special request of the Hungarians in government who threatened to leave the cabinet if their demand was not met.
The Opposition needs six more votes for the no confidence motion to pass.
The Speaker of the Senate, Democrat Liberal Vasile Blaga said the motion will not pass as there are no traitors in the Majority.
