PM to visit Auschwitz-Birkenau while in Poland

Michael Leidig

Premier Victor Ponta will visit Poland this weekend at the invitation of Polish PM Donald Tusk, the Cabinet's press office informs today (Fri). During his private visit to Poland, the PM will visit the Museum of the former death Nazi camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau. In Warsaw, Ponta and Tusk will attend the football match of the Euro 2012 between Poland and the Czech Republic. According to sources close to the cabinet, Tusk invited Ponta to Warsaw after he met him for the first time two weeks ago in Bucharest, at a reunion of 15 EU countries supporting the continuation of EU cohesion funding for the less development member-states. The Polish PM said he was very pleased with their meeting and Ponta and he, 'clicked from the first glance". "The premier will bring an homage to the victims of the Holocaust and will reiterate once more the responsibility for the participation of the Romanian authorities in the Holocaust and will express the deep regret for the loss of human lives in the tragedy of the extermination camps from Auschwitz and other extermination camps in WWII", sources told local press. Romania led by Marchall Ion Antonescu was Nazi Germany's ally during WWII. According to several historical sources, some 200,000 Jews and Roma had been sent from Romania to the Nazi death camps. King Mihai I of Romania put a stop to Antonescu's rule in August 1944 and joined the entente powers against Hitler, shortening the war by some six month, according to historians.
