Ex PM to stay in hospital for now

Michael Leidig

Former premier Adrian Nastase will stay for the time being at the Floreasca Emergency Hospital where he is under care at the intensive therapy ward, the medical team in charge with his case decided earlier today (Mon).

Nastase shot himself in the neck last Thursday, hours after he has been convicted to two years in prison for corruption.

Spokesperson with Floreasca Hospital Bogdan Opriţa told the press that considering the patient’s special legal situation, the medical team decided that the responsibility of the detainee’s possible transfer to a penitentiary can be established only by a legal medical expertise. The hospital sent the decision to the Police and the Legal medicine Institute in Bucharest. Until a legal medical team will evaluate the health condition of Nastase, the former PM will stay at Floreasca Hospital, Opriţa.

Nastase was operated last Thursday and the medics said that he has to stay in intensive care as he has a high risk of having heart attack or hi condition might worsen as he has diabetes as well.

Democrat Liberal Euro deputy Monica Macovei accused Home Affairs Minister Ioan Rus of providing Adrian Nastase a preferential treatment by not enforcing the custody warrant following its conviction. She also challenged the doctors’ diagnosis.

The Bucharest Police specified on Sunday that the warrant was not enforced as procedures have not been completed because of Nastase attempted suicide and health condition.

Macovei, a fervent opponent of Adrian Nastase, repeatedly asked for his conviction during his eight-year long legal battle with the anti-corruption prosecutors. The Social Democratic Party asked the leadership of  the Dem Libs to take distance from Macovei, a former prosecutor during Ceausescu regime, whom they depicted as having a sinister character.

Today as well, Nastase’s lawyers asked for a special call of the ruling’s cancellation, on grounds that the deeds have been prescribed at the time the ruling was given.
