PC software piracy rate drops

Romanian Times

Romania’s PC software piracy rate fell again last year, new figures have shown.

It fell two percentage points in 2008, to 66 per cent from 68 per cent in 2007.

But losses in the local software industry increased 65 per cent to 182 million Euros, according to a report of Business Software Alliance (BSA) published on its official website.

"This report attests the impact of efforts to reduce software piracy in Romania. With the economic uncertainty we are going through, it is vital that companies don’t bypass the law and use licensed software because otherwise this behaviur would increase risks of a negative impact on businesses and consumers, as well as on the local and global economy," said attorney Magda Popescu, BSA representative in Romania.

Over the past five years a clampdown by business software industry groups and the Romanian authorities has seen Romania’s software piracy rate fall from 74 per cent to 66 per cent.
