Teenage climber sets world record

A Romanian teenager has become the youngest person in the world to have climbed Carstensz Pyramid mountain (4,884 meters) in Indonesia, it was revealed today (Fri).

Crina Coco Popescu, 15, climbed Carstensz Pyramid on 24 January, Montan Altitudine Sport Club said today (Fri).

The world record was set during a five-week expedition in which Popescu participated together with her father Ovidiu Popescu.

The world record was previously held by American Samantha Larson, who reached the summit in 2007 at the age of 18.

The expedition organized by Montan Altitudine included three mountain peaks, Kosciuszko (2,228 meters), Giluwe (4,368 meters) and Carstensz Pyramid (4,884 meters).

Carstensz Pyramid is the highest mountain in Oceania and is considered to be the most- technically difficult of the Seven Summits.

Popescu has climbed four mountains of the Seven Summits over the past three years, Aconcagua, Kilimanjaro, Elbrus and Carstensz Pyramid, and five peaks of the Seven Volcanoes, Elbrus, Ojos Del Salado, Damavand, Kilimanjaro and Giluwe.

Popescu plans to climb two other mountains this year, Pico de Orizaba in Mexico (5,636 meters) and Denali in Alaska (6,194 meters).
