"Villagers are using the stronghold as a stone supply. Our Romanian people are natural born builders. They keep building fences around their houses with the stones stolen from Sacidava. If we do not re-open the site to protect it, they will soon move the entire ancient city in their own yards. It is heartbreaking to see that huge chunks from the walls have been taken out," the director said.
The archaeologist regrets the authorities did not intervene to stop the plundering of the ancient ruins.
Gabriel Custurea says he will still have to find the money to re-open the site. The museum in Constanta needs some 750,000 Euros a year just to pay for the staff wages but so far it got only 250,000 Euros. "Our budget does not cover the wages, therefore we have to find other resources. Last year we covered 60 per cent of the expenses from additional revenues, mainly extra-archaeological activities," the director says.
The museum in Constanta currently has eight archaeological sites open.
