Football moguls acquitted in 10 mn USD transfers fraud file

Michael Leidig

Eight Romanian football moguls have been acquitted today (Tues) by the Bucharest tribunal in the file over the fraud with footballers' transfers, Romania TV news channel informs.

Prosecutors with the National Anti-Corruption Department had asked the judges to sentence
the owners of the football clubs and referees George Copos, Mihai Stoica, Cristi Borcea, Giovanni Becali, Victor Becali, Jean Pădureanu, Gigi Neţoiu and Gică Popescu with prison sentences. Among those acquitted are the owners of Dinamo and Rapid clubs.

The verdict is not final, and it is expected that anti-corruption prosecutors will appeal.

The tribunal had postponed issuing its decision twice in the past two months. The eight moguls were charged with defrauding four local football clubs of 10 million US dollars by making illegal international transfers. They are also charged with tax evasion to the value of some 1.5 million US dollars.
