Timisoara wants to be Romania´s next European cultural capital

Romania's western town of Timisoara wants to become Romania's next European cultural capital, the mayoralty said today (Weds).

Timisoara will be a candidate to become the next Romanian European cultural capital in 2021, when Romania will next have the right to have a European cultural capital.

Romania's central town of Sibiu was a European cultural capital in 2007 when Romania became an EU member state. Millions of Europeans visited Sibiu that year.

The programme of European cultural capitals began in 1985, and 40 cities and towns have had the honour to date.

In 2010, Istanbul (Turkey), Pecs (Hungary) and Essen (Germany) are European cultural capitals.
