WWF raises funds for the protection of bears´ habitat in Romania

The World Wide Fund for Nature has launched a fund raising campaign for the protection of brown bears’ habitats in Romania, the organisation said on Thursday.

The WWF says it hopes to attract the two per cent tax on income, that the Romanian tax code allows to be donated for NGOs and foundations.

Luminita Tanasie, manager WWF Romania, said: "The bear is a protected species in the EU, because of the reduction of its habitat in several  countries, which led to its extinction in some of them. Romania is still hosting the majority of the bear population in the EU, which is in the same time a value and a responsibility for us to find best solutions for the management of this species."

The campaign's aim is to protect the bears' habitat, which is threatened by large deforestation.

Romanians must submit their income declarations until 17 May, and they can specify that two per cent of the tax on income is sent to an NGO.

According to local experts, over 6,200 bears currently live in Romania, which represents 47 per cent of the total population in Europe, with the exception of Russia.
