Highest mountain roads closed for winter

Romanian Times

Romanian spectacular mountain high road Transalpina will close with 1 November, due to bad weather, local authorities said today (Mon).

Transalpina is the highest mountain road in Romania (2,145m above sea level), crossing Paring Mountains, it is one of the most spectacular roads of the Carpathian Mountains and it is over 100 kilometres long.

It will be closed until at least 15 April, depending on the depth of snow.

Transalpina starts at Novaci (Gorj) and ends at Sebes (Alba) and it crosses the Paring Mountains from south to north. It was repaired and opened to traffic earlier this year.

Transfagarasan road, which was praised by the Top Gear team as being the most spectacular road in the world, is also closing until 30 June next year.

Tranfagarasan is the highest road in Romania, climbing to 2,034 metres. It runs north-south across the highest part of the Carpathian Mountains between the highest peak in the country, Moldoveanu, and the second highest, Negoiu. The road connects the historic regions of Transylvania and Wallachia, rising from 1,034 to 2,034 metres within a distance of only 30 kilometres.

The Top Gear trio of presenters, Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May filmed on the Transfagarasan road in 2009.

Clarkson described the Transfagarasan road as being "the best road I've ever driven on".

Several websites around the world have named Transfagarasan the most beautiful road in the world, among which http://carsroute.com.
